Gold Damask

The Gold Damask series is the premium segment of the Damask line, for those who seek the line's highest edge retention beyond everyday use.

At its core is SG2, a fine powder steel, hardened to 64 HRC. In total, the blades consist of 101 or 141 layers of stainless Damascus steel, including the core. This combination keeps the edge sharp for an exceptionally long time and allows for very thin blade grinds.

The series includes Petit, Kamagata, and Gyuto; the Gold Kamagata Masamoto 18 cm is manufactured by the traditional house of Masamoto in Tokyo. Those who opt for Gold Damast choose a harder core than in the 69-layer series and a blade that remains precise even with fine work. It remains rust-resistant and easy to care for: rinsing and drying by hand is sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Gold Damast Series

What is SG2 powdered steel?

SG2 is a powder metallurgy-produced, rust-resistant steel with a very fine microstructure. It can be hardened to a high degree, here to 64 HRC, which allows it to hold an edge for an exceptionally long time.

Is the extra cost worth it compared to the 69-layer series?

If maximum edge retention and a particularly fine edge are important to you, then yes. For versatile everyday use, the 69-layer series with a VG10 core is sufficient. Both are rust-resistant and easy to care for.

What do 101 or 141 plies mean?

This is the total number of layers, including the core; the Damascus layers create the grain. More layers do not automatically mean a better knife: The blacksmith adjusts the number of layers to the SG2 core for the best balance of hardness and flexibility.

Is gold damask rust-proof?

Yes. The SG2 core and the Damascus layers are rust-resistant. This makes the series one of the easy-care lines, despite its high hardness of 64 HRC.

Who is the Gold Damask line suitable for?

For ambitious chefs and for collectors who value maximum edge retention and a particularly fine edge. For versatile everyday use, the 69-layer series is sufficient.
